01.09.2004UK-based security firm Sophos reported August 30, 2004 that a new line of Trojan programs automate phishing scams. Unlike phishing scams which create fake websites, the Tolger line of Trojan programs monitor which website the user visits and captures user keystrokes and screen shots when it recognizes online banking sites, and sends that information to a remote site controlled by the attacker. The recognized targets include a number of British-based banks including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, and Nationwide, but the technique could be easily extended to other financial institutions.
