Cyber-extortion poses a growing threat, as organized criminals threaten websites with infiltration and distributed denial-of-service attacks. In a recent survey conducted by Carnegie Mellon University's H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy, 17% of the 100 companies contacted said they have been the target of some sort of cyber-extortion. While most extortion attempts fail, 70% according the Carnegie Mellon survey, cyber-extortion is a growing problem, as many small and mid-sized companies considering themselves too small to be targeted, an opinion espoused by 68% of respondents in the survey.
