Linux distributor Red Hat has released an update to its Enterprise Linux 3 with new drivers, security upgrades, and flaw patches. The update includes support for No-Execute (NX) memory on Intel x86, Intel EM64T, and Advanced Micro Devices AMD64 processors. Position Independent Executable (PIE) features guard against stack, buffer, and function pointer overflows. According to Red Hat, these features will reduce the ability of attackers to execute arbitrary code on targeted machines. Red Hat has also announced a partnership with Unisys to provide Enterprise Linux on Unisys ES7000 servers to help chief information officers standardize their data centers on less expensive Intel platforms with non-proprietary Unix systems.
