Abstract
This work presents a list of desirable secure email features as well as a list of attacks or problems, with a corresponding score card for the secure email technologies X.509 / PKI, PGP and IBE. Concise definitions for each feature or problem regarding security and privacy of email communication are also included, with a view to both improve the email security technologies X.509 / PKI, PGP and IBE, and develop the specifications for new technology beyond current limitations. Usability, as an aggregation of properties, is considered the Most Important Feature of a secure email system. The IBE technology receives the highest Usability Score. However, the IBE technology receives the lowest Security Score. Both the Usability and the Security Scores may change according to a particular use environment.
