Research from RSA Security shows that 33% of businesses in London, Milan, Paris and Frankfurt are making fundamental security mistakes in defending their wireless networks. 33% of London businesses do not use basic WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption. 25% of London businesses leave wireless networks in their default configuration, potentially broadcasting sensitive network information to malicious hackers. The numbers are higher in other cities; 41% of networks in Frankfurt are unencrypted, as are 72% in Milan. Wireless networks in London have grown by 770% in the past three years, for a total of more than 1,000. Without basic protections, wireless allows attackers to completely bypass the firewalls and perimeter defenses of wired networks for direct access.
